Lakshya Trust was founded by a group of passionate individuals committed to social change.

Nilu Rai’s journey is the cornerstone of Lakshya Paathshala’s success. Hailing from Patna, Nilu moved to Modinagar in 2010 to pursue her B.Tech degree. While studying, she was deeply moved by the plight of children living in nearby slums who spent their days rag-picking instead of attending school. Despite facing language barriers, as many of the children spoke Bengali and Assamese, Nilu’s determination led her to communicate through gestures and slowly build trust with them.

Initially, she began teaching a handful of children informally near her hostel. Her evenings were spent explaining basic literacy concepts, and soon, she became affectionately known as “Nilu Didi.” Over time, her makeshift classes grew in size as more children and their families saw her commitment.

After completing her degree in 2014, Nilu decided to dedicate herself fully to this cause. She partnered with Lakshya Trust in 2015 to formalize her efforts, giving birth to Lakshya Paathshala. Under her leadership, the initiative grew from a single classroom in a storeroom to a two-floor facility that now educates over 350 children.

However, the journey wasn’t without challenges. Nilu faced significant resistance from parents who relied on their children’s income from rag-picking. She tirelessly counseled families, emphasizing the long-term benefits of education. Additionally, securing funds for school supplies, uniforms, and transportation was a constant struggle. But her perseverance inspired many donors and volunteers to join the cause.

Today, Nilu’s efforts have transformed the lives of hundreds of children. Many have successfully transitioned into mainstream schools, and their success stories are a testament to her unwavering belief in the power of education. Nilu dreams of expanding Lakshya Paathshala’s model to other towns, ensuring that no child is left behind.
